Letter from Anne McGuire
Dear Independent Living Fund customer A routine review of the Independent Living Funds was carried out between June and December 2006 by two independent consultants, Melanie Henwood and Bob Hudson. Their report to me will be published today on the Department for Work and Pensions website at: The report is very comprehensive and contains 68 recommendations. It will take government some time to consider the implications of those recommendations. The report also advises that support provided by the ILFs should remain in its present form until 2009/2010 in the meantime working towards service improvements. I welcome this thorough report of the Independent Living Funds and I agree with the reviewers that it is critical that the Funds' customers do not lose the valuable support that the Funds currently provide. The ILFs have made a tremendous difference to thousands of disabled people, giving them independence and control over their own lives. The government will consider these recommendations and their implications for severely disabled people very carefully and we aim to publish our initial response to the report by the summer. If you cannot access the website a paper copy of the report can be ordered by post from: Jane Cocking, Department for Work and Pensions, 1-11 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6HT or by telephone from the ILFs on 0845 601 8815. An Easy-Read version of the report can be found on the DWP website and a Braille version can also be ordered on request.
