Disability Equality Scheme

The Independent Living Funds have published their Disability Equality Scheme 2006-2009 today. 

The document details the ILF's plans for the next three years to:

• promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people
• eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the Disability Discrimination Act
• eliminate harassment of disabled people that is related to their disability
• promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
• encourage participation by disabled people in public life
• take steps to meet disabled people's needs

The Scheme has been put together to comply with the Disability Equality Duty - a legal requirement for the public sector to promote disability equality and provide better outcomes for disabled people in the UK.

In preparing plans and setting objectives the ILF has involved users to find out what they think of the current service and how things could be improved. 

Chief Executive for the Independent Living Funds, Elaine Morton says:

"As the work of the ILF focuses on severely disabled people, it is vital that we can show the needs of our users are properly understood.  With that understanding, we want to show that we fully take into account those needs in how we deliver our service and develop and make our policies.  We want the ILF to become a flagship organisation for the Disability Equality Duty, not by simply "doing the Duty", but by taking a role in actively promoting it."
